Out of the Trench

"How come these albacore are still hanging around in this area?" I asked skipper Scott Meisel on the bridge of his new boat Condor. "Is it because there's bait, or structure?"

"I wish I knew," said Scott. "But I'm not seeing any bait to speak of. I don't know what the reason is. Here's where we are," he showed me on his plotter. We were up above the 1010 Trench a few miles, and the day fleet was scattered out around us.

"Let me get a shot of you at the wheel," I said.

"I'd rather have it be an action shot," he said.

Just then the boys on the afterdeck shouted, "Hookup!"

Meisel reached for his controls. I had my shot; he had his action.

Meisel's Condor is an 88-foot Peacock-built boat with a steel hull and wide decks and rounded sides, the type many refer to as a "Long Beach boat." It's very similar to the First String, and makes a roomy, comfortable day boat. Since we only had 17 anglers for our overnight trip, there was plenty of room, and I was able to snag one of six or eight double-size bunks. I slept like a baby, and enjoyed some good cooking by Scotty Caslin.

Monday, June 17 was a fair day to be out on the water, with a light, choppy westerly swell and less than ten knots of breeze. Fishing was much the same as it has been for several weeks, with the albacore mostly being discovered as small scattered schools on the boat's sonars. "Nuggets," Scott called the better little schools.

Since Condor expedition was my second day trip this June, I knew my best chances to catch fish were right after trolling hookups. We had stops all day long, though action slacked a bit during midday hours. The best stop gave us nine fish. Most stops were for one to three tuna. Clint Palmer and Australian Linke Benedict were two of the deckhands gaffing for us.
